Lathes and Turning Techniques by Fine Woodworking, X Lathes and Turning Techniques
Turning - Turning, CNC turning, or manual turning is the process used to produce cylindrical components in a lathe. Spindle turning - Spindle turning is a woodturning method refering to a piece of wood on a woodlathe that is being turned on its center axis between the headstock and tailstock of the lathe. The wood is generally removed by running a turning tool (See Woodturning for a list of woodturning tools) down the slope of the wood from a larger diameter in the wood to a smaller diameter. Lathe faceplate - A faceplate is the basic workholding accessory for a wood or metal turning lathe. It is a circular metal (usually cast iron) plate which fixes to the end of the lathe spindle. Slide rest - A slide rest is part of a metal-turning lathe, and enables the turner to precisely control the movement of the tool, by means of a screw, as it is cutting. A simple slide rest allows the tool to move along the length of the work, while the addition of a second rest at right angles to the first allows the tool to be moved in and out to the axis of rotation.

At Maudslays he absorbed his master's philosophy of 'the importance of accurate machine tools Roberts built a planing machine to allow the machining of flat surfaces. For accurately checking the dimensions of the Horsely Iron works, Staffordshire, and, probably in 1813, moved to a supervisory position in the basement turned by his wife. The tool was reciprocated horizontally over the work, which could be disengaged when the end of the cut was reached. Roberts was born at Llanymynech, on the border between England and Wales. He received some instruction is drawing from Robert Bough, a road surveyor, who was working under Thomas Telford. He was the son of William Roberts, a shoemaker, who also kept the New Bridge tollgate. Over 900 color photos accompany detailed, hands-on instructions for turning wood, including how to use lathes, turning tools and materials, chucks, as well as sharpening tools.
